These programs provide students with an opportunity to have an academic experience at Koç University by receiving lectures from top-tier faculty members, and at the same time getting engaged in a wide array of extracurricular activities. “The Stanford at Koç in Istanbul Overseas Studies Program”

The Stanford at Koç in Istanbul Overseas Studies Program is designed to give Stanford students an integrated study abroad experience in Istanbul and to provide them with an opportunity to experience rigorous academics while at the same time developing a broad awareness, knowledge and appreciation for Turkey, its culture, and its role within the global ecosystem.

The program is also open for Koç students to take courses with the attending Stanford students. The courses offered within this program are open for selection simultaneously as KU’s Spring semester courses. However, applying Koç students are expected to specify in the application form which courses they wish to select in advance of the course opening.

Application is for OIP’s tracking purposes ONLY. Sending the application form does NOT guarantee you a spot in any of the courses. Course quotas are limited. So the selection process will be on a first – come, first – served basis. If the maximum quota is reached for a certain course, applications automatically go to a waiting list.Sending the application form will be considered as student’s commitment to participating in the program. If a student has to cancel participation due to unexpected circumstances, they are required to submit a written excuse to the Dean of Students.

The important dates are:

  • 14 December 2015 – Application forms to be sent to Nilüfer Akpınar at
  • 3rd Week of December 2015 – Planning of courses starts on KUSIS (Date to be updated)
  • 11 January 2016 – First Day of Classes
  • 16 March 2016 – Last Day of Classes
  • 17-18 March 2016 – Final Exams

To be eligible for this program, students need:

  • to be at the junior or senior undergraduate level
  • to have good academic standing

  • Films on Istanbul and Istanbul in Films (Ela Başak Atakan)
  • Strategy in a Global Environment (Birgül Arslan)
  • Dreaming of a Cosmopolitan Sea:  The Mediterranean in History (Alexis Rappas)
  • Travels in Ottoman History with Evliya Çelebi (Aslı Niyazioğlu)

Normal KU course fees apply.

Nanyang Technological University “Prelude to the Middle East”

In December 2013, 28 Nanyang students came to KU to have a set of lectures. They had an intense schedule of 36 hours of lectures on topics such as Ottoman history, minority issues, Turkey and the Middle East, Caspian Basin and energy politics, Turkish foreign policy, Turkish – American relations, Turkey and the European Union, Turkish-Chinese relations, Turkish politics, archeology etc. Due to the success of the program it has been repeated every year and plans for the 2018 program are ongoing.

In addition to their academic experience, the students are also engaged in lots of cultural activities such as guided city tours organized by the OIP.

Co-developed with Nanyang Technological University, “Prelude to the Middle East” will come to Koç in December 2019 for the sixth time.
