Historically, philanthropists have played an important role in the development of civil society. Philanthropy today is a global phenomenon, utilizing a variety of institutional forms and involving both the very wealthy and those of modest resources to address issues of common concern. The nonprofit organizations that philanthropists fund represent nearly ten percent of the United States economy and nongovernmental organizations are among the fastest growing parts of economies in other parts of the world. Yet, many students are unfamiliar with philanthropy and the role nongovernmental organization plan in community life. Philanthropists are an important source of capital in social movements, encouraging innovation and supporting the nongovernmental and grass roots infrastructure that leads to social change.  Nongovernmental organizations, both formal and informal are the vehicles for philanthropists’ social investments.

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the role philanthropy and civil society organizations play in community life, specifically in Türkiye and the United States. This course introduces students to individual and institutional philanthropy and the role and management of nonprofit/civil society organizations in community life through a hands-on service-learning grantmaking experience. As part of this course students will have the opportunity to learn about several Turkish civil society organizations.  In addition, students will decide, collectively, to make a grant to one. All of the organization with which you will work will receive a grant from the class; however, you will decide which one you want to support with a larger grant.

This course is a collaboration of the Office of International Programs and Koç University Social Impact Forum (KUSIF) .
